Fatty liver disease, happens when too much fat builds up in the liver. Normally, liver has a small amount of fat, but when the fat becomes too much, it can start to damage the liver.

Two Main Types:

1. Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease– caused by drinking too much alcohol.

2. Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) or metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) – happens in people who don’t drink alcohol, and is often linked to:

  • Being overweight
  • Diabetes or high blood sugar
  • High cholesterol
  • Lack of physical activity

Is it Dangerous?

In early stages, fatty liver often doesn’t cause symptoms and may not be harmful. But if not managed, it can lead to:

  • Inflammation of the liver/ increase in liver size
  • Liver damage (called fibrosis or cirrhosis)
  • Liver failure in late stages

Common Symptoms:

Most people don’t feel anything but some may feel:

  • Tiredness/ Fatigue
  • Discomfort or pain in the upper right side of the belly

How Is It Diagnosed?

  • Blood tests (to check liver enzymes)
  • Ultrasound or CT scan
  • Sometimes needs liver biopsy

What to do for Fatty Liver?

Lifestyle changes are most important:

  • Lose weight if overweight
  • Exercise regularly
  • Eat healthy – less sugar, fat, and processed foods
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Control diabetes and cholesterol

Conclusion:

Fatty liver can improve and even reverse if caught early and treated with healthy habits. It is a warning sign to protect your liver before serious damage happens.
