It's a common condition where acid from the stomach flows backward into the food pipe (called the esophagus).

Symptoms of GERD

  • Burning in chest
  • Acid or food regurgitation in mouth
  • Persistent dry cough
  • Acidic taste in mouth

Aggravating factors

Intake of heavy meals, spicy, oily or acidic foods, tea/coffee, alcohol, or carbonated drinks and lying down after eating.

Prevention

  • Taking small frequent meals
  • Avoiding triggering foods/drinks
  • Staying upright for 2 hours after eating

Consult a Doctor

  • Acid reflux more than twice a week
  • Non-improvement of symptoms with lifestyle changes or medicine
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Weight loss

GERD if left untreated can decrease quality of life, cause complications like esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus), ulcers, or even precancerous changes.
